Chapter One

Chapter 1

He hurried down the hall, well aware that he was out after curfew.  He wasn’t sure that what he was doing was a problem, but some people didn’t care one way or the other.  Information was to be twisted and used against you, and he wanted none of that.

He picked up his pace a bit, the bag bouncing off his back clattering with each step.  He rounded corner after corner, and had almost made it back to his room when a shadowy figure stepped out in front of him.

It raised the illuminator it held as it pushed back its hood.

“Professor, what are you doing out so late?”

“I could ask you the same, carrying what sounds like Death himself in that bag…  What do you have, anyway?  Give over, I want to see what’s been waking everyone up.”

He reluctantly handed over the bag to his professor, who summarily unzipped it and emptied its contents onto the floor.  Practice swords clattered in a heap, all splintered or shattered.  Most were covered in scars from previous sessions.  A few had tooth marks.

“Training all night again, I see…”

“How did you know?”

“Who do you think kept everyone from stopping you all these other nights you were out doing the same?”

“Good point.”

I have this to say, and I’ll let you go.  Your actions have been noticed.  Recognition will come in time.”

At this, he raised his hood again and slipped back into the dimly lit hallway.
